In September 2014, Kimichi School Birmingham opened with two children and one teacher. More than a decade later it has become something that makes us genuinely proud every single day. What we are most proud of is the family feel that is so often remarked on. We joke sometimes that we are a large, slightly dysfunctional family, but that is exactly how it feels, and exactly what we are now bringing to boarding. Families come to us for many reasons, but they stay for the same one: this is a place where young people are genuinely known, and where music gives every child a way to belong. These are the things we believe set a Kimichi education apart. Our belief that music is central to great education is not simply a philosophy. It is backed by a substantial and growing body of peer reviewed research. Music Music is the heartbeat of Kimichi.
Every student learns at least one instrument, and specialist instrumental tuition is included in the fees. Students perform regularly, in ensemble, in concert and in the community. For those pursuing music professionally we offer extra practice time, audition and exam support, and direct links to Birmingham Conservatoire. Mind Education is not only about textbooks and exams. We want students to leave us confident, academically sound and socially capable. Our unique LIFE subject addresses real world skills: budgeting, cooking, driving, relationships and mental health.
Mindfulness and wellbeing are built into our structure, not an afterthought. Motivation Our schools are run by the pupils, for the pupils. The school council governs real decisions and pupils rise to that responsibility every time. Classes are so small, never more than ten, that every individual can be seen, celebrated and challenged. School trips and outdoor learning are a big part of who we are. For families who live further afield, or who simply want their child to be fully immersed in the musical life of the school, boarding at Kimichi School Birmingham offers something rare: the warmth of a small, close knit community where every boarder is known by name, and where evenings are filled with practice, rehearsal, friendship and music.
Our boarders live in comfortable, supervised accommodation with separate wings for boys and girls, and a dedicated team on hand around the clock. Boarders enjoy the luxury of single, twin or triple en-suite bedrooms. It is a setting designed to feel less like an institution and more like a family home, with cosy common rooms, shared meals and the easy companionship of living alongside other young musicians. A typical evening Days flow naturally from lessons into ensemble rehearsals and individual practice, then into supervised prep, supper together and time to relax with friends.
There is always an instrument being played somewhere in the house. Weekends bring trips, concerts, sport and the chance to explore the city, all in the company of a ready-made circle of friends who share the same love of music. We keep boarding deliberately flexible and deliberately affordable. Families can choose weekly boarding, returning home at weekends, or full time boarding across the term. Our more affordable fees mean that an immersive musical education is within reach of many more families than people often expect. We are recreating something very special, and we very much look forward to welcoming you through our doors.
